North eastern part of India hit with Earthquake

The earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Ritcher scale has taken place at 4.37 a.m local time (23:05 GMT Sunday) of about 29km (18 miles) northwest of Imphal, the capital of Manipur state, according to US Geological Survey (USGS). Manipur, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura  felt the quake too.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh who is currently in Assam, regarding the steps to be taken to provide any necessary relief to those affected. The Northeast region of India is considered the sixth major earthquake-prone belt in the world.


As soon as they felts massive tremors in about twice in 60 seconds, the people of Gauhati panicked and rushed out of their homes . The residents of Imphal state that the furniture in the house was knocked over and the books fell down but there was no damage persisting majorly.


The Dhaka Tribune said thousands of people rushed into the streets of the Bangladeshi capital when the strong tremors struck early Monday morning. Dhaka is about 350 km (220 miles) from the epicenter of the quake.The quake struck 55 kilometers (34 miles) beneath the earth’s surface. While farther below the earth’s surface than some notorious historical quakes, this temblor is still considered a shallow-focus earthquake. Shallow earthquakes tend to produce more violent shaking near the epicenter than deeper earthquakes of equal magnitude, but they tend to be felt over a smaller geographic area.
